Africa is Rising: Women Leaders Convene for Think Tank Base Camp
Tuesday, December 2, 2014 – Women leaders and men allies from across Africa gathered in Nairobi, Kenya from November 26th to the 28th for the Think Tank on “Strengthening Women Leaders’ Base Camp,” jointly organized by Isis-WICCE and Urgent Action Fund- Africa (UAF-Africa) and supported by Ford Foundation East Africa Office.
The convening provided a platform for African women to share experiences, tactics, lessons learnt, and strategize on the way forward for women leaders to effectively engage and influence issues on the national, regional and international level.
The three-day meeting highlighted the need to ground women’s leadership in positive pan-African cultural values and principles in order to create effective and innovative leadership strategies. During the opening session Head of Grant-making at UAF-Africa, Caroline Kiarie, reiterated that “this prioritization of hot leadership issues is important because as we demand for transformative leadership that is inclusive, accountable, transparent, equitable and just, we also need to define, embrace and live these values for ourselves and pass the same to the next generation of leaders”.
Over the course of the meeting, participants attended workshops on the transformational power of participatory leadership, development of effective media strategies, interactive facilitation, and implementation of effective approaches in addressing women’s leadership in conflict and post-conflict settings.
In addition to the sessions, the meeting expanded the social and professional networks of women leaders and social justice activists and created a space for them to empower one another through the sharing of experiences.
