Malawi’s Minister of Gender, Children and Social Welfare, Anita Kalinde says Africa needs visionary and transformative that can always incorporate views of women and provide them with a conducive environment for their participation in developing the region. Speaking after the official opening the Women Steering Innovative Leadership in Africa conference in Malawi’s capital Lilongwe, Kalinde said in order to encourage more women participation in leadership and government, the world should give them the support they require and create space for them.

“Women play important roles in their community such as nurturing and taking care of their families and community members which makes them loyal and dependable citizens of their nations,” Kalinde said.
She told the conference that women contribute significantly to the development agenda of their nations because they all make decisions that mould children and give life and society existence.
Kalinde also stressed the need for the women to work together in collaboration with men and integrate young women into leadership. During the ceremony, the minister also launched the Urgent Action Fund- Africa program titled: African Women’s Leadership and Mentoring Initiative. The program which will run for four years is aimed at establishing a movement of visionary, innovative, creative and high impact African women leadership that is able to transform Africa’s Development agenda.
The program is being piloted in Malawi, Kenya, and Cameroon, Cote D’Ivoire and South Sudan involving coaching and mentoring of young women by selected gender equality leadership champions. The conference, which has attracted over 250 women from 20 African countries, will end on September 11, 2013.
