African women urged to be proactive

African women in the region have been challenged to be proactive in claiming leadership positions in their respective countries.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for Equity Bank group based in Kenya James Mwangi made the call in Lilongwe yesterday at the opening of three-day international conference organised by the Women Steering Innovative Leadership in Africa.
The conference intends to bring about a shift in the concept of leadership with reference to women’s leadership, by developing a new cadre of women leaders, who are well grounded in community, national and global issues in order to play leading roles in bringing about change.
Mwangi who is also Chairperson of the Bank observed that most women tend to take a laid-back approach and want leadership positions handed to them on a silver platter.
He called upon the women to rise up to the occasion and fight for what is duly theirs instead of complaining and looking for sympathy.
