Today, Urgent Action Fund-Africa (UAF-Africa), calls on women, men and young people around the world to join forces, and demand an end to the ongoing senseless killing taking place in South Sudan.

Since the start of the conflict in late 2013, tens of thousands of civilians have lost their lives, and more than a million people have been displaced from their homes; nearly half a million have fled to neighboring countries including Uganda, Ethiopia, Sudan and Kenya. Today, the situation in South Sudan is extremely dire and dangerous. The ongoing conflict has led to the destruction of cities, the collapse of the economy and food production. Indicators show that the world’s youngest country will face one of the most devastating famines to date in a matter of weeks. Along with the violence there have been disturbing reports that local radio stations are being used by insurgents to encourage fighters to rape opposition women, a stance that is resolutely and absolutely denounced by UAF-Africa.

It’s clear that the world must now do more to address this crisis. The delay and the lack of progress in the peace talks in Addis Ababa and the armed mobilization by the conflicting parties is devastating. We as activists need to condemn these unjust, unhuman and brutal actions. Justice must be secured for the people of South Sudan, and their human rights and dignity must be respected. It is the priority for the Government of South Sudan to uphold the principles of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights. This is why Urgent Action Fund-Africa stands in solidarity with Avert Genocide in South Sudan and many other interested social justice activists, and specifically call on all responsible citizens to take simple acts to build and guard peace, end impunity and demand accountability and justice. As you speak out, we will speak with you. As you stand out, we will stand with you. Silence is never an option.
