Katswe Sistahood to launch a campaign against revenge pornography in Zimbabwe

Revenge porn hurts girls and women. It is a breach of one’s right to privacy when one turns a private sexual image (or footage) into a public one, without the victim’s consent. Over the past three years, Katswe Sistahood, a Zimbabwean feminist organisation that works for the reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of womenhas received many cases of girls & young women whose estranged ‘lovers’ would use images and videos to blackmail and manipulate them. Two years in a row: the winners of the Miss Zimbabwe beauty pageant were stripped of their titles because someone leaked nude pictures (allegedly theirs), which went viral on social media platforms. It is hard for a girl or woman whose images are used against her to simply move on. Imagine walking down the street, waiting in a supermarket queue, or walking into a job interview, and constantly wondering if the eyes that meet yours have seen pictures that violated you. It can cause distress and shame, and can crush you completely.

Call to Action:

This year, during the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence, join Katswe Sistahood and the girls and young women in Zimbabwe as they call on Parliament to urgently enact laws that prohibit the non-consensual distribution of privately captured sexually explicit material.
