Building a Feminist Dialogue Front Against Conservative Rollback
Senegal Senegal has made notable legal gains on women’s rights, including the criminalisation of rape,…
Central African Republic
The Central African Republic continues to record one of the world’s highest maternal mortality rates globally, shaped by deeply entrenched restrictive gender norms and structural barriers to women’s health. Anti-rights movements continue to restrict access to contraception and safe abortion, reinforcing harmful norms and
limiting women’s autonomy. In 2025, the introduction of a restrictive cybersecurity law added a new layer of control, extending patriarchal authority into digital spaces and further constraining women’s access to information and freedom of expression.
With time funding, Nalafem (Nala Feminist Collective) implemented a multi-layered response combining community outreach, media engagement, and institutional capacity strengthening. The organisation conducted 12 sensitisation campaigns and aired 6 radio programs in French and Sango, reaching 3,075 people with accessible information on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). Complementing this outreach, they developed practical SRHR manuals tailored to local realities.
Nalafem equally established 3 community protection committees and trained health professionals, magistrates, and police on the Maputo Protocol, directly engaging these gatekeepers responsible for service access, protection, and justice.Overall, community awareness of women’s rights increased, alongside stronger local protection mechanisms and improved identification and referral of GBV cases, thereby strengthening community commitment to accountability, justice, and care for women and girls.
