Philanthropic advocacy is an essential programmatic intervention and political act which harnesses the most compelling ideas to influence change proactively and enable mutual solidarity. Realising the power of ideas in shaping public opinion, engaging in public education, and informing change, we work through coalition and collective building to advance issues and activities led by those we partner with in movements.
To Centralise collective action through coalition work and movement-building approaches for agenda setting to influence policy and practice on pan-African and feminist philanthropy.
Institutionalised philanthropy has a role in supporting constituency-led agendas but requires radical transformation if it is to be in solidarity. UAF-Africa’s philanthropy advocacy aims to advance a political vision, discourse and practice grounded in solidarity, mutuality, and collective humanity by supporting collective action by various feminists, AWHRDs and other formations, which is critical to building movements and creating systemic change.
Urgent situations, emergencies, political, economic, and social crises, and disasters will continue to dominate the shaping of the contexts in which we do our activism and work. It is critical to understand these from a feminist and pan-Africanist perspective and to influence how state and non-state actors respond to and manage these. Organising with messaging through the mass/traditional media and social and digital media are two powerful paths for influence and persuasion and strengthening advocacy by expanding the base of people who support our agenda, helps feminist activists and AWHRDs be better able to do their work when the forces which oppress and attack them are exposed, and demands for their freedom and dignity are sustained.
African proverb: “A path is made by walking on it.”
